General Info

Tucked away at 16 Rodney Rd, Cheltenham GL50 1JJ, United Kingdom, Purslane Restaurant offers the kind of dining experience that feels both refined and welcoming at the same time. As a seafood restaurant known for its thoughtful menu and polished atmosphere, Purslane Restaurant stands out among Cheltenham dining spots. The location itself is easy to find, and once inside, the upscale yet relaxed setting immediately sets the tone for a memorable meal.

From the moment I arrived for lunch, the service felt attentive without being intrusive. The restaurant offers convenient delivery for those who prefer enjoying the menu at home, but dining in gives you the full experience. With comfortable seating, a well-maintained restroom, and a calm ambiance, it’s the sort of place where you can take your time and truly enjoy the food.

The menu at Purslane Restaurant focuses on seafood while still offering a balanced selection of flavors and textures. One of the most memorable starters I tried was the ceviche, which arrived beautifully presented and full of bright, fresh flavors. The citrus notes were vibrant without overpowering the delicate seafood. Alongside it, the black treacle sourdough added a rich, slightly sweet depth that paired surprisingly well with the lighter dishes.

Moving through the meal, the kitchen’s attention to detail became even clearer. A dish featuring red cabbage added both color and balance to the plate, complementing the seafood elements nicely. The flavors felt carefully layered rather than complicated, which made the experience feel natural and satisfying. It’s easy to see why many reviews praise the restaurant’s thoughtful approach to cooking.

To cleanse the palate, the sorbet was refreshingly smooth and light. It provided just the right pause between courses. And for dessert, the dessert pumpkin dish stood out as something a bit different from the usual sweet offerings. It was subtly sweet, comforting, and finished the meal on a warm note.

For those who enjoy a drink with their meal, Purslane Restaurant offers beer that pairs well with the seafood-focused menu. During lunch service, the atmosphere remains relaxed and ideal for both casual diners and those looking for a slightly more upscale midday break.

Overall, the combination of carefully prepared dishes, a well-structured menu, and attentive service makes Purslane Restaurant a standout seafood destination in Cheltenham. Whether stopping by for lunch, ordering delivery, or enjoying a slow meal with friends, the restaurant delivers a dining experience that feels thoughtful, polished, and genuinely enjoyable.

What customers say?

“ Food was nice but too complicated cwith long explanation when it served. Too many items and many types of sauces in one dish and I was puzzled what I was eating. The choco tart was nice even though I waited for 25 mins. If coffee was served at the same time as we asked, that would be better. ”

“ Oh wow. How this restaurant doesn't have a Michelin star yet I have no idea. Super friendly and attentive staff, some of the best seafood dishes we've ever had. Very generous portions - after a 7 course tasting menu we were absolutely stuffed and very pleasantly tipsy. And for a very reasonable price given the quality! Definitely worth a visit. ”

“ Lovely little restaurant, really enjoyable experience. Really well presented food in a relaxed but smart environment. Some really tasty 'snacks from the kitchen' prior to the main event. Minor criticism there could have been a bit more fish in the mains and the flavour could have been a bit more intense. ”

“ We reached a whole new level of indulgence tonight… what an incredible menu! The food was absolutely out of this world. While the ambiance could have been a bit more intimate, the music was great and the overall vibe was inviting and relaxed, not the least bit stuffy. The service team was warm and attentive, though a bit more confidence and finesse in presenting the new menu would elevate the experience even further. A little extra polish from the bartender (particularly around the wine pairings) would also bring it up to the level of a true Michelin experience. That said, everything else was divine. The meal was utterly glorious, and we’ll definitely be back! ”

“ Went for the 7 course tasting with wine pairing - and the food was incredible. They accommodated us with a pescetarian tasting menu - switched the meat course for another fish course, which was much appreciated. The wines paired beautifully and you got to experience a lot from different countries. The ‘snacks’ were basically another course and the breads were fresh and warm. Really reasonable for a tasting menu of such high quality! Would definitely recommend! ”

“ We had a great meal at Purslane. The food was excellent and very inventive. I would highly recommend the scallops which were fantastic! The restaurant has been set up with very smart screens between tables to allow diners to feel safe but maintain a decent amount of tables. We were very impressed by how the staff adapted to the new environment and all the precautions they took! ”

“ An absolute amazement for tastebuds ! The menu has limited choices in order to provide the best quality of ingredients, the most amazing combinations of tastes, and arrangements on plates looking fabulous. I totally recommend it! The atmosphere is a bit religious, as Purslane is obviously a favourite for couples who speak quietly. Note as a slight minus that service is charged on top as a gratuity that does not seem as discretional as it says, as it is added to the bill. Given the price of the courses, 12% turn out to be a nice sum for waitering a small number of tables. I think I would prefer to give an extra to the kitchen, as it is where the magic happens. But let it not deter you from experiencing a festival of flavours ! ”

“ We had an amazing meal in lovely surroundings with great service. Yes the taster menu is expensive but it's worth every penny. Truly wonderful flavour and presentation. ”
